Cylindrical battery cell

Cylindrical battery cell

Cylindrical and prismatic batteries are the most common choices for manufacturing lithium batteries on the market. Cylindrical batteries are the most common type of batteries used today. Compared with prismatic batteries, the production speed of cylindrical batteries is much faster, so each battery can produce more kWh per day, which is equivalent to lower cost per kWh. The electrodes in the cylindrical battery are tightly wound and encased in a metal casing, which minimizes the breakdown of the electrode material due to mechanical vibration, thermal cycling caused by charging and discharging, and mechanical expansion of the internal current conductor caused by thermal cycling. Many batteries are combined in series and parallel to increase the voltage and capacity of the battery pack. If one battery is broken, the impact on the entire battery pack is small. For prismatic batteries, if one battery fails, it may endanger the entire battery pack. Cylindrical batteries are easier to dissipate heat and control temperature than prismatic batteries.
