BYD Energy Storage Enables 2.6GWh Bisha Project Grid Link in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia, targeting 50% renewable electricity by 2030 and aspiring to become a premier green energy centre, has reached a significant milestone. The recent grid connection of the 2.6GWh Bisha Battery Energy Storage Project marks it as the largest single-phase grid-tied energy storage installation completed globally to date.

All energy storage systems operating below 33kV at this facility were provided by BYD Energy Storage, encompassing 488 units of its 5.365MWh MC Cube ESS. Technological Leadership

Situated in Saudi Arabia’s Asir Province, the Bisha project can supply the grid with stable power for up to four hours. Its MC Cube ESS units incorporate BYD’s industry-first CTS (Cell to System) super‑integration technology and are equipped with the company’s Blade Battery designed specifically for storage applications. This results in a record Vcts (volume ratio of cell to system) surpassing 33%. The ultra‑thin battery architecture enables a three‑dimensional spatial arrangement reminiscent of perfectly interlocking Tetris blocks, while innovative structural design reduces component count, boosts space utilisation and energy density, and continues to push boundaries in system integration.

The integrated Battery Management System (BMS) within the MC Cube ESS monitors cell status in real time to maintain optimal performance. Comprehensive safety features help prevent risks including overcharging, excessive discharge and thermal runaway, thereby ensuring consistent system stability and security.

BYD’s advanced intelligent management platform stores energy during low‑demand periods and releases it during peak hours, reinforcing grid reliability. Its flexibility and scalability also allow configurations to be adjusted in line with evolving network requirements, offering robust backing for Saudi Vision 2030 objectives.

Recently, BYD Energy Storage once again aligned with Saudi national strategy by securing a historic agreement with the Saudi Electricity Company for the world’s largest grid‑side storage project, sized at 12.5GWh. Combined with the now‑operational 2.6GWh Bisha facility, total collaboration between the two parties has reached 15.1GWh.
