Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) has entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with global resources leader BHP Group Limited. The agreement establishes a collaborative framework focused on battery technology and electrification initiatives within the mining sector.
Under the MOU, CATL and BHP will investigate potential applications for battery technology in mining equipment and locomotives, encompassing rapid charging infrastructure development. The partnership will also assess energy storage systems and battery recycling solutions tailored for BHP's mining operations.
CATL, recognized as a global leader in new energy innovation, aims to foster a zero-carbon future through advanced technology. The company is actively developing cutting-edge battery technologies and energy solutions designed to accelerate the energy transition and support the growth of e-mobility.
This collaboration presents significant potential to expedite decarbonization within the mining industry. It aligns with BHP's long-term objective of achieving net zero operational greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1 and 2 from operated assets) by calendar year 2050.
The partnership will not only seek pathways for electrifying BHP's mining activities but also prioritize advancing the circular economy. This includes enhancing battery recycling processes, potentially leveraging BHP's copper operations, to establish more sustainable value chains across the mining sector.
BHP Chief Commercial Officer Rashpal Bhatti stated that such strategic relationships are crucial steps towards meeting BHP's operational decarbonization goals and driving transformative change in the global resources industry. He highlighted CATL's leadership in battery technology, energy storage, and recycling, emphasizing that collaboration with industry leaders is key to shaping a more productive and sustainable future for the sector.
Tan Libin, head of overseas business at CATL, expressed enthusiasm for partnering with BHP, citing shared commitments to a zero-carbon energy transition. Tan indicated that working with forward-thinking miners like BHP demonstrates how advanced battery technologies can decarbonize mining operations, logistics, and product delivery, ultimately accelerating a sustainable, efficient future and transforming the global resources industry through innovation.
