São Paulo, Brazil, July 24th, 2025 — Sungrow, a global leader in PV inverters and energy storage systems, has secured official approval from Brazil's National Electric System Operator (ONS) for all dynamic models of its inverters sold in the country. This confirms compliance with stringent standards, accurately representing dynamic behavior during electromechanical and electromagnetic transients. The approval underscores Sungrow's commitment to technical excellence and supporting Brazil's grid modernization.
Addressing Grid Stability Concerns
A major 2023 blackout in Brazil highlighted critical needs for precise dynamic modeling of renewable plants, particularly regarding inverter behavior during disturbances like reactive power support and low-voltage ride-through (LVRT). In response, ONS issued Report RAP 0012/2023 in October 2023, initiating a structured evaluation program for inverter and power plant controller (PPC) models to improve simulation reliability.
Rigorous Technical Validation Process
Collaborating closely with ONS, Sungrow subjected its inverters to extensive simulation and testing. The process used PSCAD for electromagnetic transients and ANATEM for RMS-based electromechanical transients—critical for analyzing switching events, faults, and power electronics interactions. Validation occurred in two challenging phases:
Level 1 (L1): Semi-physical controller validation ensured PSCAD model accuracy against actual hardware.
Level 2 (L2): A cross-verified ANATEM model was developed from the validated PSCAD base.
Sungrow acknowledged ONS's technical expertise throughout, emphasizing its commitment to strengthening Brazil's National Interconnected System (SIN). The company mobilized significant resources—including local teams, global R&D experts, and consultants—to meet all modeling standards. Approval now covers all central, string, and modular inverters sold in Brazil.
"Sungrow’s high-performance, grid-compliant solutions directly support the stability and modernization of Brazil’s power infrastructure," stated Ada Li, Vice President of Sungrow Americas.
