On January 8, 2026, operations officially commenced at the 500 MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) located at the Maritsa East 3 power plant in Bulgaria.
Developed through a strategic partnership between BYD Energy Storage and ContourGlobal, this facility stands as one of the largest standalone storage projects in Eastern Europe. Marking BYD’s most significant deployment in the region to date, the project follows a cooperation agreement signed in December 2024. The collaboration leverages BYD’s technical infrastructure alongside ContourGlobal’s operational reach, signaling a deepening footprint for energy storage solutions within the European renewable energy market.
Representatives from BYD Energy Storage joined ContourGlobal CEO Antonio Cammisecra for the official commissioning and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The successful launch highlights a joint effort to facilitate the transition from traditional power generation to sustainable grid systems, aiming to bolster energy resilience and support the long-term energy future of Eastern Europe.
