Beijing – Chinese battery giant CATL and German automaker BMW Group have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to deepen their partnership in sustainable development and technological innovation, with a focus on trusted data exchange and decarbonization across the power battery supply chain. The agreement was signed on February 25 in Beijing, coinciding with the visit of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz accompanied by a high-level business delegation.
Under the MOU, the two companies will launch pilot projects on cross-border data transfer under the Battery Passport framework, aiming to enhance cooperation in carbon accounting methodologies and innovative tools for calculating battery carbon footprints. The initiatives will leverage the standardized automotive data ecosystem Catena-X to support technical standards alignment and promote coherent policy frameworks for long-term industrial stability.
By exploring Battery Passport applications, CATL and BMW are conducting innovative practices for China-EU regulatory compliance, jointly driving the adoption of global battery information and data standards. The partnership, which dates back to 2012, has evolved from product-level cooperation—covering battery production, R&D, and sustainable supply chains—to broader institutional coordination under the new MOU.
Through enhanced digital management and exchange capabilities, both parties aim to strengthen compliance with EU market regulations and boost the low-carbon competitiveness of their products. CATL reiterated its commitment to open collaboration with international partners, leveraging technological innovation to accelerate the global green transition and shape a sustainable future for the automotive industry.
