Sungrow, a global leader in PV inverter and energy storage systems, has been selected to supply technology for New Zealand’s largest solar project—the Tauhei Solar Farm, situated near Te Aroha in the North Island. The company will provide and commission its advanced central inverters for this landmark initiative.
Developed through a joint venture between Harmony Energy and Clarus, the 202 MWp (150 MW AC) Tauhei Solar Farm is scheduled to begin operations by late 2026. Upon completion, the facility is projected to generate approximately 280 GWh of clean electricity annually—enough to supply over 35,000 households—marking a major step toward New Zealand’s decarbonization targets.
Sungrow will equip the solar farm with 27 units of its SG6800HV-MV central inverters and a PPC1000 Power Plant Controller. The inverters offer up to 99% efficiency and incorporate effective cooling mechanisms for reliable performance in high temperatures. Integrated monitoring allows real-time analysis and troubleshooting, while the PPC1000 supports intelligent energy management and enhances operational efficiency through advanced diagnostics.
The Tauhei Solar Farm will connect to Transpower’s 110 kV grid via the Waihou substation, feeding renewable energy into the national network. In addition to generating clean power, the solar panels will provide shelter for grazing livestock, supporting agricultural co-benefits.
During peak construction, the project is expected to create around 350 full-time equivalent jobs, offering a substantial boost to the local economy and establishing long-term employment opportunities.
Joe Zhou, Sungrow Australia’s Country Manager, stated, “We are proud to contribute to this landmark project, which showcases how innovation and collaboration can help build a cleaner energy future for New Zealand.”
