CATL Completes All Three GBA Battery Passport Pilots

CATL Becomes First Battery Company to Join All Three GBA Battery Passport Pilot Waves

CATL has become the first battery company to have battery passports published across all three waves of the Global Battery Alliance’s Battery Passport pilot program, according to results announced by the GBA for its 2026 pilot. The company’s participation in the latest wave was its third consecutive involvement, making it the only battery company globally to have taken part in every GBA pilot wave to date. The GBA said the results underscore CATL’s long-term commitment to transparency, sustainability and resilience across the global battery value chain.

The GBA Battery Passport pilot program is designed to establish a standardized methodology for monitoring, quantifying and verifying the ESG performance of batteries throughout their lifecycle. By offering a common framework for sustainability data and disclosure, the initiative seeks to address growing demand for greater transparency and accountability across the global new energy value chain.

The 2026 pilot included cell manufacturers representing nearly 80% of global production capacity. In the pilot assessment, CATL’s battery product showed strong performance across the full process, achieving comprehensive ESG data coverage from mining, refining and materials through to cells and battery packs.

“The GBA Battery Passport pilot program provides an effective methodology for the industry to monitor, quantify and demonstrate ESG performance across the battery value chain,” Dennis Pan, Chief Sustainability Officer of CATL, said. “It helps the industry better prepare for future sustainability risks and challenges.”

Inga Petersen, Executive Director of the Global Battery Alliance, said CATL had been a committed participant from the beginning and had helped translate an ambitious vision into a practical framework for greater transparency and accountability across global battery value chains. She said the alliance was preparing to make the GBA Battery Passport certification scheme fully available in early 2027, moving from operational trials to full-scale implementation, and looked forward to CATL’s continued leadership in the next phase.

CATL’s involvement in the program dates back to January 2023, when the GBA published the world’s first Battery Passport proof of concept. In the second pilot wave, CATL applied for separate battery passports for its Shenxing battery and CTP battery, becoming one of the first companies to publicly release pilot results validated by an independent third party.

CATL is the only battery company with TWh-scale shipments to achieve carbon neutrality across its core operations, according to the company. It said it had reached its 2025 milestone as scheduled and is now advancing toward its 2035 goal of full value-chain carbon neutrality. Looking ahead, CATL said it will continue to work with global partners to support the development and implementation of sustainability standards for the new energy industry.
