HiTHIUM Powers Statkraft’s Spanish Wind Farm with 30.1MWh BESS

Hithium & Statkraft Enter Strategic Partnership

Navarra, Spain, July 28th — Energy storage provider HiTHIUM has secured an agreement to supply containerized battery energy storage systems (BESS) and ongoing technical services to Statkraft, a major European renewable energy producer. The deal includes six ∞Block units, each rated at 5.016MWh, along with power conversion systems sourced from a Spanish manufacturer, delivering a turnkey configuration aimed at high-density storage and grid-scale dependability. The total capacity of 30.1MWh will be installed at Statkraft’s Montes de Cierzo Wind Farm in northern Spain, where the batteries are expected to smooth power output, supply ancillary services such as frequency regulation, and perform peak shaving and valley filling to boost the utilization of wind-generated electricity.

"This project marks an important step in Statkraft’s energy storage development in Spain, and our collaboration with HiTHIUM has been a positive part of that process. Pairing battery storage with wind generation allows us to make better use of renewable output, add flexibility, and support a more resilient grid," said José Miguel Ferrer Rodriguez, Statkraft's Country Manager for Iberia.

"This is our first project in Navarra, and we are proud to partner with Statkraft on the region's significant Montes de Cierzo initiative," commented Kelson Li, Vice President of HiTHIUM Europe. "Working with a top European producer and earning their confidence in our technology is an important achievement for HiTHIUM in Europe. Supporting Navarra's clean energy targets also gives us a meaningful entry into the Iberian power market."

The ∞Block units use liquid cooling to manage thermal conditions, helping maintain stable performance in the region's climate, where summer temperatures can exceed 40°C and winter lows approach freezing. Improved thermal regulation is expected to extend battery life and allow for a more compact container arrangement. The systems incorporate HiTHIUM's prismatic 314 Ah LPF cells, which offer a high cycle lifespan. Manufactured and tested at HiTHIUM's facilities, the units benefit from rigorous quality control processes aimed at ensuring long-term reliability.

The Montes de Cierzo wind farm, located in Tudela, Navarra, was originally commissioned in 2000 and supplied power to more than 41,000 households. It is currently undergoing repowering: the first phase, completed in spring 2026, replaced 44 older turbines with ten new units, while the second phase will introduce battery storage and exchange the remaining 41 turbines for four new ones. During phase-one dismantling, Statkraft reports that nearly all materials were reused or recycled, including close to 2,000 tonnes of steel, along with aluminium, copper, fibreglass, and various other components. Despite a sharp reduction in turbine count, Statkraft expects to raise the site's total capacity from 60MW to 90MW, with annual generation projected to roughly double to approximately 300GWh.
